The Citadel and surrounding parks are lined with protected specimen trees, some of which are 2-300 years old and are of species that are now very rare. The planting date and the planter of some of teh old trees has been recorded and are now protected by Vietnam Association for Conservation of Nature and Environment. Each tree has its own cultural significance, much as flowers do.
