We are honoured to have this extraordinary lacquer piece by Saeko Ando on exhibition at March Gallery this summer.
'Mirror, mirror' 90x90cm, is an autobiographical lacquer work that describes the conundrum inside us all. When we look in the mirror, we sometimes see a stranger. Our outward appearance doesn't always reflect the person within.
Saeko works exclusively in Vietnamese lacquer and has a worldwide reputation for achieving high luminosity, great depth of texture and light and bringing her own Japanese aesthetic to everything she creates.
Vietnamese lacquer is hardly ever used because it is rare and it is hard to manipulate. Even Vietnamese artists usually work with cheaper, Korean and Japanese laquers that are easier to use but lack the glow of the native Vietnamese product.
