At the morning markets, all over Vietnam, you will see these little baskets of fish for sale. Three fish or four fish maybe. The most common lunchtime meal is fish with boiled rice, usually served with a small bowl of clear vegetable soup and a pot of green tea.


For three short months, in 2013, I was given the use of a fisherman's cottage out on the sea strand. Every day, the man's wife would  come from next door with a tray of home made food for me. There would be fish that had been caught that very morning from the beach just 30 mtrs away, a bowl of clear broth, a small bowl of boiled rice and some morning glory pan-fried with garlic. It was a feast!
