Choosing the right paint colours


When you visit the art shop, the choice of paint colours is overwhelming. To make it easier, you might choose of the pocket watercolour palettes which usually have 12 colours; 2 yellows, 2 Blues, 2 reds, 2 browns, 2 greens, black and white.


In this tutorial, I will show you how these palettes are put together, the difference between 'primary' colours and other colours and how to get become familiar with your paints selection.


To follow along with this tutorial you will need:

  1. 300gsm cold pressed or hot pressed watercolour paper

  2. a medium round brush

  3. a pencil

  4. water

  5. these colours of paint

    1. Lemon Yellow

    2. Yellow Ochre

    3. Cadmium Red / primary red

    4. Alizaran crimson

    5. Pthalo blue / intense blue / primary blue

    6. Ultramarine blue

    7. Burnt Umber

    8. Burnt Sienna

    9. Viridian

    10. Violet / purple

    11. White
